Costa Rica is described as the Switzerland of Central America due to its long democratic history and magnificent terrain. It has emerged as a pioneer of progressive social policies that protect the rights of women and children. In the past decade, it has also become a favorite destination for eco-tourism. Less known is its ethnic and racial diversity. Our program will explore the impact of transnational migrations on community development and racial/ethnic identity formations. Through instruction and field trips to indigenous, Afro-Caribbean and other immigrant communities, our program will offer an opportunity to study complex identity formations in a global context.
Courses Offered:
* CHI 125S - Latino Families in the Age of Globalization: Migration and Transcultration
* CHI 198 - Directed Group Study
* Experience the biodiversity of Costa Rica through field trips to Monteverde and the Caribbean.
* Learn about the ethnic and racial diversity of the country by staying in an indigenous village alongside local Ticos.
* Participate first hand in the life of aboriginal communities by learning their crafts, meeting the youth, and playing sports.

UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
