On this program, students will study in San Cristobal de las Casas, the urban political center of Zapatista activism and the hub of a flourishing indigenous literary movement in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The political/cultural context for the course is the Zapatista movement--students will have access to many resources on the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) through the course materials, and in the city of San Cristobal. At CELALI, the state Center for Indigenous Literature, Art, and Languages, students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with Mayan intellectuals and creative writers who work on indigenous language and literary revitalization, and the social transformation of their communities. Students will visit ancient sacred sites, a prominent Mayan women's center and performance space, and different Mayan communities, including some of the Zapatista autonomous communities. UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
