Project Itinerary

Induction - Your experience teaching in China starts with a four week Induction/Training program. (Please note the length of this period will vary dependent on the size of the group and level of prior teaching experience/knowledge of participants). The Induction/Training period is designed to help you get the best out of your teaching experience. They are:

- An introduction to China's history and culture. The cultural norms and the do's and don'ts
- Chinese language training - the basics for beginners, improvements for others. These will include words you may need when teaching. Classes are conducted by Chinese students who are studying teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
- Intensive Teacher Training which will focus on the qualities of a good teacher, structuring and preparing for lessons, how to behave in the classroom; classroom management including how to make best use of a Chinese assistant teacher, observing English lessons by current (Western) paid teachers and Chinese teachers and some practice sessions in a school of our choice. Many of our paid teachers tell us how nervous they are before their first lessons! We understand this and pay particular attention to helping you through those first few moments.
- Traditional Chinese activities & local tours which may include Tai Chi, mahjong, Chinese chess, paper crafting, painting Chinese characters, Chinese cooking, and/or some visits to local sights!

Your Teaching Assignment
You will be advised of your teaching placement during your induction and will be transferred to the appropriate location upon completion of your teacher training. Schools determine which teachers they want. Before your placement is confirmed, you will be required to attend an interview. This will normally involve a meeting with the Headmaster in person or over Skype. A video will also be sent to him/her of you in a teaching situation.

Alternatively, in a few cases, the interview may consist of teaching a class of 60 students in front of key teachers/the headmaster. Non-native English speaking teachers who wish to attend the program will also have an initial interview on Skype with a representative from Tru Experience Travel to ensure their spoken English meets the required standards.
The focus of your assignment will be teaching conversational English to children between the ages of six and 18 years old. Please note that you will not be expected to teach English grammar. This is the role of the Chinese teachers of English language and their classroom assistants. So don't worry about being an expert in the complex rules of syntax, verbs and tenses!

Schools are usually large with between 1,000-3,000 students and are either private or state owned. Classroom sizes in schools are usually 60+ children per class. Training Centres tend to have smaller class sizes with anywhere between 5-25 students per class.

You will teach, on average, for 20 hours per week between the hours of 9am to 6pm over a period of 5 days (Mon-Fri). You will be issued with a teaching schedule before your assignment begins. Where Chinese public/national holidays fall during the week, you will be required to 'make up' the hours 'lost' by teaching on another day during the following week, or possibly even a weekend.

What do I need to bring?
Whilst this list is not exhaustive, the key priorities are:-

- Sufficient cash to cover you for your first 1-2 months as salaries are paid monthly in arrears so it is important that you budget accordingly
- Appropriate clothing for teaching, including shoes
- A laptop/notepad (useful for lesson plans and searching for materials)
- 2 x 2 pin American or Continental plugs and adapters

For more information about your paid teaching placement in China lease take at look at the question and answer section. It contains important advice and is highly recommended that you read it before you travel to China.

Note: Most western mobile phone networks do not operate in China. It is therefore recommended that you purchase a mobile phone when you arrive in China - they are readily available and not very expensive.
