  • Description

    Help provide a safe, fun, and creative environment for poor Ghanaian children during their school vacation at a fantastic, much-loved summer camp! Organize and assist with volunteer projects such as arts and crafts, drama, dance, sports, and so much more! This camp costs nothing for the children to participate and the experience that they have here is just as priceless! This camp survives on the enthusiasm and passion of our volunteers. You can help them have this incredible experience!

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
    One of the obvious activities will be sports - as many varied sports as possible - plus various other children's activities, such as:
    --> Any ball games, like Football, Cricket, Basketball, Rounders or Netball
    --> Frisbee games
    --> Dancing - Ghanaians love to dance, so putting together a dance concert or dance competition would be fun
    --> Drama - Informal Drama productions is another activity that can be initiated - and all kids love play-acting!
    --> Music - teaching them to sing, to play an instrument and perhaps to put together a concert to be performed at the end of the holidays
    --> Magic tricks, juggling or circus-type activities
    --> Simple games like hopscotch, skipping, hula-hoops.
    --> Arts and Crafts
    --> Any creative activities, like face painting
    --> Reading from story books
    --> Or anything else your imagination can dream up that will amuse the children.

    Plus the kids will be learning to use English at the same time, so they'll not only have fun, they'll also benefit from the activity. These activities will also benefit the children by improving their team-work skills, social interaction and building their confidence. You may work for only a few hours a day, or you may find that you want to devote more time to the children.

    The school will remain open during the holidays because they are also running extra-curricular academic lessons for the children who need them.

    You will be left very much to your own devices, therefore being creative is very much a must. You may work with large or small groups of children, so you need to be diverse and organised, but you are encouraged to utilise any skills or passions you have, whether these are playing sport, music, drama or just games. You'll be rewarded by how much fun the children will have!

    WHAT YOU WILL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
    --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Latin America.
    --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
    --> An entry on your CV or resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
    --> The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them
    --> And best of all.. an unforgettable experience!

    WHAT OUR USERS SAY...
    "I am having an amazing time. Aloy (Aloysius is Travellers Ghanaian Manager) and the principal, Mr Banini, have really supported us and helped with anything they can. We are all building up a really good relationship with the kids so even though it's hard, the teaching is also really good fun. This morning as I walked down the last stretch of road to school a group of children from the summer camp saw me and ran towards me shouting my name at the tops of their voices. They all grabbed me and gave me a huge hug in the middle of the street - it was a great feeling and put a smile on my face for hours!!"

    WHAT TO DO NEXT:
    Call us - We're there to help you. Most of our team are ex Travellers volunteers and are ideally qualified to offer advice and guidance because they know what you're looking for. They'll help you find your perfect project - and then make it all happen!
    If you'd like more information about this or any of our projects, please email or call us!

    If you'd like to apply for this project, please go to our website and complete the application form. As soon as we receive it, we'll liaise with you and then start making your travel adventure happen. It's as easy as that.

    LOCATION:
    The Summer Fun School will take place in the grounds of one of the local schools in Kwabenya and will be for children from all around the area, including other schools in the community. Kwabenya is a small town/suburb about forty minutes drive outside Accra city centre and a place where many of our teaching volunteers are based.

    ACCOMMODATIONS:
    Accommodation will vary, depending on your work location. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside.

    Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ghana and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family. Sometimes members of their Ghanaian family have even gone to visit them in their home country.

    FOOD:
    Food will be local cuisine - again this is to enable you to fully experience living as local Ghanaians do.

    Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.
