Volunteer teaching with disadvantaged, poor, and charming children from kindergarten age - age 16, in the port city of Mombasa. You can teach English, art, music, drama, sports, IT, maths, in fact almost anything you're knowledgeable in! Most schools in Mombasa are quite small and so you will instantly feel as though you are part of the family! We work with deserving schools, orphanages, care homes and some adult centres. Your work is very much appreciated and will also be a valuable entry on your Resume.
The schools generally range from 100 to 300 pupils at one given time. This means that class sizes are also fairly small and very manageable, normally ranging from 20 to 40. Our projects are flexible to suit you, so you choose your start and finish dates. You really can make a big difference to the local children and communities.
How This Project Benefits The Children:
Your teaching will help in so many ways and you will be teaching to people who really want to learn as they know that it will result in greater opportunities in life for them. For the luckier ones, your teaching may mean they will get into a better university or improve their career prospects. The impact you will have on the lives of those you teach may well surprise you!
Additional Activities You Cab Do While On This Project:
--> 1-Week Swahili language Course: Kick-start your time in Kenya with An optional 1-week language course that will intensify your Kenyan adventure!
--> Exploring the Country: There are many beautiful beaches in the region that you can go to during the weekends. You're within fairly easy reach of some of the world's most famous Game Reserves, like the Masai Mara with its huge populations of Big Five animals. There are also loads of tourist sights to see as well as cultural activities. African towns and villages are fascinating and so different to what we're used to in the Western world.
This project can also be combined with any of our other projects in Kenya, or you can venture further afield into Zambia and Zimbabwe to take part in one of our fascinating projects there.
What To Do Next:

Location:
Mombasa is an island connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries and the town itself overlooks a fascinating harbour of traditional sailing dhows alongside commercial shipping. To most people, Mombasa is a wonderful place, a combination of a tourist resort and a working city with a throbbing heart and laid-back attitude.
This sultry area offers interesting things to see, beaches to relax on and beautiful nature reserves to visit. Mombasa is a bustling city with a history stretching back to the 12th century. There is a vibrant mixture of cultures, architecture and entertainment.
The true heart of Mombasa is the exotic old town. Here the streets are narrow and winding and filled with the heady scent of spices. Amongst the Arab architecture you'll find women wearing the traditional bui bui and busy markets that throb with life and colour, all added to by the wrap-around cloth of the traditional coastal khanga and kikoy that is worn by both men and women. A spectacular coral reef runs for 480 km along the palm-fringed coastline and the beaches of Kenya have become one of the world's great playgrounds The sun shines all year round and when it sets, Mombasa has an exciting nightlife.
Accommodation:
Your accommodation will vary, depending on which school you're placed in. We have different types of accommodation, but you will most likely live with a local family. Volunteers and family members frequently become very good friends and even stay in touch once the volunteers have left the country. Living with a family also gives you the opportunity to experience the true African experience from the inside and not just as a "tourist" on the surface of the country.
"My family were fantastic and went beyond their duties to make me welcome. Njeri [Travellers' Mombasa Organiser] was always helpful should I need anything." Caroline Chadwick
