This internship is an excellent opportunity to get firsthand experience in Medicine in a Salitas or Primary Care Centre in Buenos Aires. You'll shadow different doctors as they treat patients, thus giving you the rare opportunity to gain an insight into the workings of a medical unit in a different country. This will definitely stand out on your CV.
You'll work in a Primary Care Centre, or "Salitas" as they are called in Spanish. Primary Care Centres are the first level of access for disadvantaged people in poor neighbourhoods. This is why they are strategically located within these neighbourhoods, to be closer to the people. They are also the first place to go to when you have a health problem and need professional assistance. In primary Care Centres they have family doctors, paediatricians, nurses, psychologists, dentists and social workers, as well as sundry other specialties. It is also worth mentioning that in Argentina, Primary Care Centres are free to all.
You'll help the community members to improve their health and search for more efficient ways of preventing diseases. You'll shadow doctors and nurses in their daily activities as they work with patients, including:
* Taking vitals
* Treating injuries
* Interacting with patients
You may also be called upon to perform other duties when needed, such as assisting with document translations and helping to categorise medications that have been donated to the Centre.
The local doctors and nurses will assist you to gain knowledge about the practice of medicine in poor communities and neighbourhoods, as well as providing you with a practical perspective regarding the needs and concerns of the people who attend the Health Centre. Here you'll have a real opportunity to exchange information, questions and answers with patients and doctors and get to know a real community and its daily struggles.
In turn, the medical staff have commented on the value of learning from you - "We learn from their experience and knowledge [including] different ways of communicating with patients and professional staff."
You'll work an average of 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday. That will leave you enough time to explore beautiful Buenos Aires!
