  • Description

On this Medical work experience placement, you'll observe the work of doctors and nurses in a variety of hospitals and/or departments. This placement is ideal for those studying Medicine and also for Pre-Meds who are looking for something valuable to enhance their CVs or Résumés.

Nepal is a very diverse country - filled with varied landscapes, beautiful scenery and endless sights to explore!

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
It's likely that you'll be based in a range of hospitals, depending on what's required most at the time that you're there. The hospitals are either in the district of Kathmandu or Lalitpur meaning that they are very conveniently located, enabling you to experience life on the outskirts of two of the most well established cities in the Kathmandu Valley.

We work at a combination of public (government-run) and private hospitals, many of which vary in terms of size and the number of departments. The majority of your work will involve shadowing and assisting the doctors and nurses on their daily rounds at the hospitals.

    - OPD Services
    - Pediatrics
    - Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and Imaging
    - Pathology
    - Endoscopy
    - Cancer prevention
    - Record keeping
    - Nursing
    - Ambulance
    - Medical Library Assistance
    - Dental Care

    WORK CONTENT:
Due to health and safety regulations, this is an observation only placement. This means that the majority of your work will involve shadowing and/or assisting the doctors and nurses at the hospital. However, through shadowing and observation, you will be able to learn about a number of different procedures and add to any knowledge you may already have. It's also a great opportunity to ask questions and deepen your understanding.

The staff at the hospitals will be happy to involve you and will certainly appreciate the assistance!

Depending on your interests, we can tailor your placement so that you work in a specific department (please note that this is subject to availability and the needs of the hospital). Generally, you will be expected to work a 6-day week (from Sunday to Friday), but you can also choose to work 5 days a week. Your working day will be from 9 am to 3 pm, with a short break for lunch.

    ACCOMMODATIONS:
During your project, you'll with a Nepali host family, enabling you to experience the true culture of Nepal! This house is also where our Dentistry Work Experience volunteers stay. The house is very basic, but still has all of the facilities that you'll need.

There is a communal area equipped with sofas, a TV and DVD Player. In the kitchen there are communal facilities available for you to use, including a cooker, kettle, fridge and toaster. You'll most likely share a bedroom with other volunteers on your programme. If you would like a private room, please let us know and we can most likely arrange it for you - this may depend on how many volunteers are staying at the accommodation at any one time. You'll also share a bathroom with other volunteers. The bathroom again is basic and of local standard, but it is equipped with a Western style toilet and shower. (Due to the water systems in Nepal, showers are likely to be cold.)

Your accommodation is conveniently located just 5 minutes walking distance from the town of Chabahil a small suburb of Kathmandu, where the historically important Licchabi Stupa is based. Most of the hospitals that you'll be working in are up to half an hour's journey away from the accommodation by bus. On your first day, you will be given an induction and shown where to get the bus from.

Your host family will provide you with three meals a day. Breakfast usually consists of a selection of tea, coffee, eggs and toast. Lunch and dinner will be Nepali Style meaning lots of Dahl Bhat!
