The experience you gain in Kenya will be a lot different to anything you may have been used to and will be an excellent entry on your CV.
The type of work you will be allocated will depend to an extent on your own abilities and capabilities, which is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety. You will be involved in aspects of the day-to-day running of the hospitals, observing or directly assisting, where possible. You can help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice.
As a volunteer your work may take you into all departments, depending on your knowledge and experience. However, if you're not qualified, you won't be allowed into operating theaters.

* Immunization
* Radiology
* Rural health
* Pharmacy
* Laboratories
* And more..
Your hours may vary insofar as they will be subject to shift rotas. Normally you will work from 8.30 to 5.30 Monday to Friday. However, you may sometimes work evenings or nights, sometimes over weekends, etc., but you will have time off on other days instead.
Another aspect of your work may be to help and assist the local doctors and nurses with their daily rounds, making medical notes and updating records. You could also be asked to help with computer entries, and help clean equipment and various areas within the hospital. You will be given basic and general on the job training by your supervisor, and further jobs should become available for those with medical experience.
The hospital is a district hospital with over 100 staff working there. It has many different departments ranging from Antenatal, pharmacy and HIV counseling.
The hospital provides 'complete Medical Care'. It is both an in and out patients hospital, that has many different departments. Such as radiology, pharmacy laboratory and many more
ACCOMMODATION AND LIVING IN DIANI
Your accommodation is located in Diani, close to the beach, and your accommodation may vary depending on the project you chose, you will usually live with a host family.
The opportunity to live and immerse yourself in the culture by living with a family can be the most enjoyable part of your placement. Many volunteers have 'adopted' their host families (and been adopted by them) and they stay in touch with each other for many years afterwards.
The hosts are all very nice! Many of our volunteers cry buckets when they leave, because they feel like they're leaving home. Living with a family in the local culture is a true cultural experience that you cannot gain as a 'tourist'.
Most host family accommodation is located no more than 1.5km away from the beach.
Host family homes all have the basic facilities, but some may also have TV and Radio and a Western style toilet the levels of facilities will vary depending on the family's financial position.
Depending on availability, you may be accommodated in a hostel or similar type of accommodation.
Food: Your food will be prepared for you, and if you are not going to be there for lunch then a packed lunch will be provided. Food will be a mixture of Western and delicious, exotic local meals and includes fruit, fruit juice, etc - you'll only need pocket money and funds to travel around and explore in your leisure time.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
* An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Africa and the diverse cultures in Kenya.
* New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
* An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
