  • Description

    Gain vital Journalism work experience on a leisure magazine located in the wine-making region of Mendoza. The magazine focuses on the region of Mendoza and all it has to offer in terms of wines, tourism, excursions (places to visit and recommendations of places to eat), and Argentina in general. You don't need any Spanish as the magazine is written in English.

    You'll work on an English-language Leisure Magazine based in the wine making region of Mendoza.The magazine comes out every 2 months so you must spend a minimum of 2 months on this placement. You'll have the opportunity to work on your own initiative and you'll be able to go out of your own to do field research for your articles, hence you need to be an 'independent spirit'. You may be asked to write about wineries (which could be far away), or about leisure activities for which you may need to go on adventure tours such as skiing and horse riding.

    The team of staff at the magazine is small and consists of: Charley, the editor, and his partner Kelly, the Tourism Director, as well as a secretary who is also in charge of advertising. When each issue is close to print, a Graphic Designer assists the team. Help is also received from free-lance journalists who aren't based in the office.

    You will have plenty of opportunities to get involved in creating an issue of the magazine and will be involved with:

    * Researching and writing articles
    * Assisting with proof reading of articles
    * Graphic design and photography (if you have any previous experience of this it would be a great advantage)
    * Traveling - finding new places and writing about them (for example, restaurants, wineries, etc) - this will most often involve day trips where traveling expenses will be covered.

    "I feel that I am learning about the culture of Argentina and the working climate in Mendoza. I have learned the basics of how a magazine is run and managed and the steps of going from the concept to the printed product. I think interning at the wine magazine has been an exciting learning experience. It is a great way to explore a new area of the world and live at a different pace of life. My boss was very fun and flexible and always inclusive so I could learn as much as possible about the entire magazine process. The best thing about my placement has been to learn about wine and to be able to have so many adventures in Argentina! I have been encouraged to explore and learn as much as possible! It has also been really great to live with a family and practice my Spanish. I think the placement was great!" Lauren Sanne.
