  • Description

Volunteer coaching football/soccer in multiple schools in Accra, Ghana affects the well-being of many children as it provides a safe after-school activity that boosts confidence and team-building skills. You can even play on a local team and increase your skills! The challenging opportunity to coach cricket to children in Ghana will also give you experience as a coach as well as offering students in Accra the chance to show you how much they appreciate your knowledge of the sport. They will want to impress you with their skills! These two exciting and active sports projects are very important to the children that they benefit.

WHAT YOUR WILL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
--> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into a very African country.
--> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
--> An entry on your CV or resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
--> The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them
--> And best of all.. an unforgettable experience!

    COACHING FOOTBALL/SOCCER - PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Many children in Ghana don't have the opportunity to receive proper coaching at a young age and they lack the basic ball skills and understanding of the game compared to those in Europe. The skill level within the country is very high and with professional coaching from Travellers volunteers, children will be able to use their raw talent more effectively and in a structured way.

You'll work with a number of schools in Accra, coaching football during lesson times and coaching the school teams after school. As well as coaching football you will be involved in organising, managing and running the Travellers Football Tournaments. You don't have to have a great knowledge of the game and the rules, but you must be an enthusiastic person who enjoys playing the game.

As there is very little sports infrastructure and little opportunity for schools to play in competitive tournaments in Ghana, Travellers have created a number of tournaments which allow the children to use the skills they have learnt from the volunteers and put them into practice playing against other schools. If you are involved in one of these tournaments, it will be the highlight of your placement. You'll see how all of the work you have done on your placement will have paid off - and to see the enjoyment it brings to the children is priceless.

    COACHING CRICKET-PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Ghana is not the first country to spring to mind to play the sport but after years of England being beaten by Sri Lanka and Australia, England have now found a new competitor - in the hot, dusty African fields of Ghana. We're looking for cricket enthusiasts as volunteers who can continue with the ground work that our volunteers hve already started. We also want to expand the cricket programme to other schools, hopefully culminating in an annual Cricket Tournament. At the moment teaching cricket takes place in three schools and you may work at all three.

Part of the uniqueness of Cricket is that the game also embodies a philosophy and discipline based on "fair play" and other life skills - so you'll actually be teaching the children more than 'just cricket'!

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS WHO CAN DO WHILE VOLUNTEER COACHING CRICKET:
At the same time as teaching Cricket, you can also teach other subjects, such as conversational English or even other sports, if you'd like to. You don't need any qualifications to participate in a teaching placement in Ghana (but if you're combining Cricket with teaching English, you do need to be fluent in English).

Travellers Worldwide, together with the Ghana Cricket Association, have set up a cricket development program to develop the sport in Ghana and to give Ghanaian children the opportunity to learn to play and compete within a new and exciting sport.

Your role at the school will be to coach cricket at the school during lesson times. After school you could be involved in selecting and coaching an Under-12s and Under-14s team for all of the schools. On the weekends you might have the opportunity to coach and train with the Ghana National Cricket team depending on the season.

    OUR USERS SAY:
"My family Lizzie and Prince are lovely. The children are very sweet and I feel extremely lucky to have been placed with them. The house is of a Western standard in most ways and Lizzie's cooking is excellent. I feel a part of their family already."

    LOCATION:
There is lots of the good stuff in Ghana - lots of overwhelming hospitality, friendliness, religions and languages. There's also lots of music, dancing, action and socialising in Accra - and lots and lots of glorious open African country and sunshine!

    ACCOMMODATIONS:
Your accommodation will vary, depending on your work location. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside. Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ghana and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family. Sometimes members of their Ghanaian family have even gone to visit them in their home country.

Food will be local cuisine - again this is to enable you to fully experience living as local Ghanaians do.

Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.
