  • Description

Observe the work of the Nepali Dentists at this small but successful dental clinic in Chabahil, Kathmandu. This placement is ideal for those studying Dentistry and those who simply want to gain some firsthand experience in Dentistry.

Nepal is a very diverse country - filled with stunning landscape, diverse climatic zones and endless sights to explore.

    PROJECT OVERVIEW
Our Dentistry Work Experience Internships are based in the district of Kathmandu in the suburb of Chabahil, in Kathmandu. You will be working in a Dental Clinic which is committed to providing quality services to the surrounding community. This placement will give you the fantastic opportunity of learning how Dental Care works in a developing country such as Nepal in comparison to your home country.

    WORK CONTENT:
The majority of your work will involve shadowing and assisting the Dentist while they treat the patients who visit the clinic each day meaning that you will get the chance to learn about a wide range of procedures that take place at the clinic.

Depending on the time of your placement and the goals of the Dental Practice, you may also get the opportunity to take part in the Mobile Dental Camp, which visits many neighbouring communities and including schools and orphanages. When the Dental Camps operate, their main aim is to improve dental health in the community. They address people's concerns and raise awareness of the importance of dental healthcare. This is particularly important in Nepal as many people, particularly those in remote mountain villages, don't have access to regular health care.

The Dental Clinic also runs its very own 3-year long dental course, where students can train to become dental professionals. You may also get the chance to sit in on lessons that take place.

Generally, you will be expected to work a 6-day week (from Sunday to Friday), but you can also choose to work 5 days a week, if you prefer. Your working day will be from 9 am to 3 pm, with a short break for lunch.

    ACCOMMODATIONS:
You'll live with a Nepali host family, enabling you to experience the true culture of Nepal! This house is also where our Medical Work Experience volunteers stay.

The house is very basic, but still has all of the facilities that you'll need. There is a communal area equipped with sofas, a TV and DVD Player. In the kitchen there are communal facilities available for you to use, including a cooker, kettle, fridge and toaster. You'll most likely share a bedroom with other volunteers on your programme. If you would like a private room, please let us know and we can most likely arrange it for you - this may depend on how many volunteers are staying at the accommodation at any one time. You'll also share a bathroom with other volunteers. The bathroom again is basic and of local standard, but it is equipped with a Western style toilet and shower. (Due to the water systems in Nepal, showers are likely to be cold.)

Your accommodation is conveniently located just 5 minutes walking distance from the town of Chabahil a small suburb of Kathmandu, where the historically important Licchabi Stupa is based. Most of the hospitals that you'll be working in are up to half an hour's journey away from the accommodation by bus. On your first day, you will be given an induction and shown where to get the bus from.

Your host family will provide you with three meals a day. Breakfast usually consists of a selection of tea, coffee, eggs and toast. Lunch and dinner will be Nepali Style meaning lots of Dahl Bhat!
