The NZCPA look after the current and past professional cricket players as well as developing cricket in the underprivileged communities of New Zealand through a programme called "Hooked on Cricket".

    The experience you gain on this unusual work experience project will be an excellent entry to your CV, helping you stand out amongst other job seekers. On this project, you'll be able to involve yourself in a number of different roles:
    --> Sports administration and management
    --> Coaching
    --> Organising cricket events
    --> Cricket development

    ABOUT THE NZCPA:
    The NZCPA was founded in the 2001/2002 cricket season and is made up of around 142 past and present first class cricketers. The organisation was formed as a means of offering support to New Zealand cricket players. The NZCPA objectives are to;
    --> Ensure the best possible professional cricket environment for NZ players;
    --> Assist players in their overall development, both on and off the field;
    --> Ensure an efficient and effective communication, support and advisory network;
    --> Contribute to the management and development of cricket.

    WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM THIS PROJECT:
    --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into popular New Zealand.
    --> You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a cultural environment that's different to what you're used to.
    --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
    --> An entry on your CV or resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
    --> And best of all.. an unforgettable experience!

    PROJECT OVERVIEW:
    You'll be involved in a number of different activities during the day. A typical day will consist of assisting with the administration and management of the NZCPA, which includes, for example:
    --> Handling specific cricket related projects given to you
    --> Running and coaching the Hooked on Cricket program
    --> Organising cricket events
    --> Marketing

    As well as working at the NZCPA you will have the opportunity to train with our partner cricket team in the evenings and, if you are good enough, you may have the opportunity to play for them at the weekend.

    THE HOOKED ON CRICKET PROGRAMME:
    The Hooked on Cricket program was established by the NZCPA to enable New Zealand's professional players to give something back to the community. The focus of the programme is to provide coaching programmes for the underprivileged communities in New Zealand, namely Maori and South Pacific Island children. Each participating school receives an on-site coaching session with a first class cricketer from New Zealand. You'll volunteer on the Hooked on

    Cricket programme alongside New Zealand's professional players.
    At the end of the coaching week each school is invited to take part in the Hooked on Cricket tournament, allowing each school team to have a game captained by a first class cricketer. Having the opportunity to meet some of the NZ cricket team will be a highlight for the children, not to mention you as a volunteer!

    The Hooked on cricket program takes place in Auckland and other areas of New Zealand. You'll assist with coaching on the Auckland programmes and may attend other venues in the North Island.

    PROJECT DATES AND REQUIREMENTS:
    This project runs for six months of the year from September - March. The Hooked on Cricket programs run from late September and coaching takes place in each different school venue for one week. In Auckland, the Hooked on Cricket program takes place in October. Working hours are fairly flexible but you will generally be required to work from 9:00 - 4:00 or 5:00.

    You'll have the opportunity to train and possibly play with a cricket club in Auckland. The cricket season runs from 1st October - 31st March. Games take place on the weekends during the season.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    You must be 20+ years old, spend a minimum of 2 months on the placement and have a working knowledge of cricket. You don't need previous cricket coaching experience, but you should be confident in your abilities as a player and willing to work hard.

  • Highlights

    ACCOMMODATION AND LOCATION:
    Your accommodation is located in the city centre of Auckland. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll live in a Lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

    Entertainment at your accommodation includes cheap internet access and cable TV (Sky) as well as an outside balcony. You are literally a stroll from the Sky Tower, harbor and waterfront. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to parts of Auckland and New Zealand or to the many other 'things to do'!

    The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs, or you could head over to the viaduct for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which is close to your accommodation.
    Maori settlement in Auckland was at least 800 years ago. Different tribes built fortifications on the various volcanoes in Auckland. When the British arrived in 1840 they claimed Auckland as the capital city of New Zealand until Wellington became the capital 25 years later.The city is modern and vibrant - a fun and friendly city with beautiful surrounding islands and harbour.

    Some of its more famous attractions include the Sky Tower, Rangitoto Island, the Harbour, the Hukani Gulf Islands and the many extinct volcanoes Auckland which provide great views of the city. Auckland has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is New Zealand lamb. For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Auckland's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a wide range of restaurants.

    Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.
