  • Description

Watoto Wema is a word in Swahili, and in English it means 'lovely children'.

Watoto Wema Children Center is situated in the uplands of the east land area of Nairobi. The home was founded two years ago and is now situated in a rental building. The previous land that they occupied belonged to the government and so the management had to relocate the kids to another rental place before acquiring a land of their own.

The center has around 30 kids who are jovial and happy despite the poverty that surrounds them. They normally reside in the various small rooms that are divided into the sleeping quarters, eating place, bathroom and kitchen.

The younger kids under 5 years do go to school in that center, while the rest leave for the public schools around the area.

The home has a manager. His name is Lusweti. He has a really big heart in caring for the kids in all situations.

The kids come from various backgrounds. They are mainly street kids, slum kids, vulnerable and abused kids.

  • Highlights

Volunteers who visit the center are involved in various activities during their volunteership mainly:

    - Help out in preparing meals for the kids, lunch mainly.
    - Helping in the cleaning of the home
    - Tutoring the small kids on the basic curriculum
    - Playing sports with the kids

The home is in a very needy condition so any help in terms of items or money is highly acceptable, but you can't do that unless you get the opportunity to come and see for yourself how exciting it is to work and bond with these kids, and how a wonderful time you will have while here.

Volunteering is a will one takes in life to learn, experience and touch to make a difference.
