  • Description

    Kaloleni is a small town south of Nairobi. It is the divisional headquarters of Kaloleni division. The mijikenda tribe notably the giriama clan mostly inhabits this area. People in this area are mostly farmers of maize, cassava and you will be amazed of the beautiful coconut plantation covering this area.

    St. Luke's Mission Hospital:
    This hospital is located in Kaloleni town. Missionaries ran this hospital until the early 90's when it was handed to the government. It is presently sponsored by USAID and the BUSH Hospital Foundation who has began a nursing school in the hospital. It has a bed capacity of 100. The administrator welcomed the idea of hosting volunteers in the hospital. They also welcome long term interns and professional volunteers to work in the hospital departments and the nursing school.

    The hospital is the only referral hospital in 100 kilometers north and 40 kilometers south of Kaloleni. It receives a lot of patients that the local staff cannot cope with.

    The hospital is burdened by the shortage of manpower to deliver its services. Touch Africa introduced general volunteer placements at the hospital where we are welcoming both local and international volunteers irrespective of race, religion and gender.

    Work that Volunteer will be involved in:
    - Receiving and registering patients.
    - Updating medical records.
    - Hospital outreach programmes such as immunizations.
    - Going round the wards with nurses to visit patients.
    - Office and computer work at the administration block.
    - Any other activity/programme available during the volunteer placement.
    - Weighing of children and registering new births.

    What kind of volunteer are we looking for:
    * General people who can do any of the work above
    * Medical students
    * Medical professional
    * Nursing students
    * Nursing professionals

    Volunteers will be staying with a local host family in order to experience the culture of the local people at Kaloleni. Most notably is the Dyeka family, which is fun and interactive. They keep cows and volunteers sometime help in milking and attending to the cows.
