Eco Adventure Tour with Touch Africa

Volunteer Work Placement: Shepherds Orphanage Kayole

3 Week Program

This program runs for three times a year on the month of April, August and December. It can be re-run any other time of the year if we reach the minimum number of participants needed which is 6 per trip. This program is real value for money and an authentic Kenyan experience.

Through a combination of volunteer work, home stays, outdoor adventure, and intense developing world travel each participant is set up for a dynamic first hand learning experience about the region they are traveling. At the same time, they are presented with a unique environment and opportunity for self discovery.

Teams of up to 14 people between the ages of 18 and 25 travel together, with two group leaders.

The trip will take off with a minimum of 6 people.

Highlights

NAIROBI
All the participant will stay at one place and conduct the group activity at the shephards children home.

We are in serious discussions with the managent to see the best group activity that they can do while here; and this will also depend on the budget that the school has for the group project.

We were able to relocate the children home from a 2 room rental place to their own big and spacious piece of land; this is a permanent lease piece of land from the government.

They have built semi- permanent structures made of iron sheets; the buildings have no floor and it's all soil on the floor.

We are still thinking of the most viable income generating activity that we can start at the home.

In the meantime we can put cemented floor in the dormitories. Both the boys and girls dormitory. (using the remaining balance)

* Organise for songs and dances with the kids.
* Teach English and arts to the children.
* Organise for a general clean up at the home.
* Repair broken beds and other furniture.
* Distribute used clothes and repair worn out clothes;
* Purchase a few new small budgets things e.g utensils, beddings, mattresses,school stationery (anything that is within budget)
* Teach the kids on personal hygiene practises.
* Establish a garden for the kids.
* Take the kids out one afternoon to a nice place park etc (this has never happened)
* Work hand in hand with the local community in the above initiatives.
* This is the first major group the children home will get as visitors and we want to have a maximum impact at this place.
* The participants will have to do a massive clothing drive in their respective communities, families, friends and relatives. Businesses etc.
* They should bring clothes of all sizes both used and new. toys stationery, playing things etc;
* The clothes for the adults will be distributed to the local community;
* This is a slum area and some of the neighbours are very poor; they will benefit a lot from these donations as long as they agree to come work with us for the 5 days at the children home for the sake of the children.
* This will also create an awareness and sense of ownership and encourage more participation in the children home on the part of the community.

STAY
The visitors will be staying as a group in town and driving every day to the children home; this is because the children home is located in a slum area with no basic amenities (running water, electricity, flashing toilet) for the visitors.

SAFARI
* We have added one more extra day of safari to give enough time for students to rest and enjoy their time in the park.
* We also want to add another extra park visit; the nakuru national park famous for its flamingos and guaranteed sight of the rhino.
* We know the program is very squeezed but we will be creating time to rest and always ask students how they feel about the next day activity.
* To instill discipline in the group; all activities are compulsory except when indicated optional or when one is not feeling well. More emphasis is to be placed on the shepherd orphanage project.
