  • Description

    Examine Renaissance art, architecture, science, and literature while exploring marvels in and around Florence. As the home to some of the world's most famous art, architecture, and early scientific minds, Florence and its surrounding area are ideal sites to study how math and science helped to create such masterpieces as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo, and the Vatican.

  • Highlights

    * Coursework *
    Learn how famous sculptors, artists, and painters used mathematics to depict history and religion during the Renaissance period. Walk through the streets where Michelangelo carved "the David" and Leonardo da Vinci honed both his artistic and scientific skills. Study how Galileo struggled with his belief in the church and his quest to understand the universe, the issues behind the construction of the Duomo, and the convergence of mathematics and art during the Renaissance. Knowledge of Italian is not required.

    * Excursions *
    Excursions include tours of art galleries, the Uffizi, Pitti Palace, and the Duomo. Outside of Florence, students visit Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano, and Vinci. There is also a weekend trip to Rome to visit the Vatican, St. Peter's Cathedral, and the Roman ruins.

    * Housing and Meals *
    Students live in shared apartments with other program participants. A welcome dinner and farewell luncheon are included in the program fee. Additional meals can be taken in the apartments or at local eateries.

    * On-Sight Support *
    On-site support is provided by ACCENT. Students may have access to a computer lab, a classroom space, and a library. On-site staff provide information to students regarding cultural activities as well as ensuring 24-hour emergency support.
