Report from Abroad is for journalism students looking to jump-start their careers. This program combines a practical internship with intensive Russian lessons and focused journalism projects. You'll build a portfolio of published material while honing skills that any serious journalist needs: your writing, research skills, and a foreign language.
Students spend a minimum of 25 real hours per week working for a local paper (such as The Moscow Times, The St. Petersburg Times, The Vladivostok Times, or The Central Asian Times). Students will work with the editors there to research, write, and publish articles. Students will also work at transcribing interviews and generally assisting management and staff in the daily production of the newspaper.
* Russian Language Study: 12 academic hours per week of small-group language lessons with focus on the principles of translation from Russian to English.
* Seminar "Living and Working in Russia" addresses important issues to those considering working in Russia, including visas, work permits, daily life in Russia, employment opportunities in the public and private sectors and how to navigate them.
* Academic course "Rhetoric in the Russian Mass Media" - crucial to understanding how Russian mass media operates in the society.
* Journalism Internship: students spend a minimum of 25 real hours per week working for a local paper (such as The Moscow Times, The St. Petersburg Times, The Vladivostok Times, or The Central Asian Times).
* Culture Lab: excursions, seminars, and other out-of-the-classroom experiences at locations of historical, cultural, or other interest.
* Journalism Project: students seeking credit for Report from Abroad must complete a 12-15 page paper on a specific issue affecting journalism in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, or Ukraine or on the history of journalism in one of those countries during a specific time period. Students not seeking credit will undertake projects such as writing cultural reviews, press releases, or other writing for SRAS or its partners.
Applicants should have exceptional writing skills in English, previous journalism experience, and advanced Russian language skills.
