Students work closely with a world-renowned faculty composed of both academics and practitioners from many different legal traditions. Classes and seminars are offered in all areas of international law.

The Graduate Institute's PhD with a specialisation in International Law is a challenging degree tailored for outstanding students with a strong commitment to international law and a proven ability in independent research work. It helps prepare graduates for an academic career, or for research-oriented positions in the public or private sector.

The PhD programme is small by design and admits a limited number of students each year. The size of the programme and close contact with professors offer an intimate and highly stimulating environment in which to grow intellectually. This specialisation is a recognised and well established platform for advanced graduate research in international law. With a large diversity of research and professional interests, the faculty members offer research supervision in a wide range of subjects.

Apart from formal research supervision from their doctorate supervisor (a professor of the Law Unit), doctoral students can expect wider intellectual support at all stages of their research.

Highlights

The Graduate Institute is an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the cross-cutting fields of international relations and development studies. Through our core activities, we develop creative thinking on world affairs and foster global responsibility. We are a cosmopolitan community located at the heart of an international centre of multilateral governance preparing future policy-makers to lead tomorrow's world.

The Institute offers postgraduate-level teaching (Master's and PhD), carries out thematic research on important global issues, and provides executive education. It is also a forum for forward-looking reflection.

Born of the merger of two outstanding and pioneering graduate schools, the Institute benefits from a diverse and rich legacy. In the case of international studies, its history is closely linked to the founding of the international system and the League of Nations in the 1920s. The Institute's expertise in development studies was forged at the time of emergence of the developing world in the 1960s.

Our location, Geneva, is home to many of the world's prominent international organisations, hundreds of non-governmental organisations as well as numerous headquarters of leading multinational companies, making it an ideal place to study, teach and research global issues.
