  • Description

The University of Otago was established in Dunedin in 1869, making it New Zealand's oldest university. With approximately 22,000 students, Otago has a wide range of student services from 24-hour computer laboratories to sports and recreational facilities and more than 100 student clubs and societies. The campus setting is traditional and much like larger universities in North America while still being close to town.

  • Highlights

There are a variety of outdoor activities for students to enjoy in Dunedin. Due to its proximity to the coast, students studying at Otago have the opportunity to spend their free time at the beach. Other options include hiking in the local hills, visiting the Dunedin Botanic Gardens on the northern edge of campus or observing the diverse wildlife of the Otago Peninsula.

The Otago campus is a mix of traditional and modern architecture with the Water of Leith winding its way throughout. Beyond the campus there are several grocery stores and shopping centers within walking distance, making it easy to find anything you may need.

Former students will tell you that their professors and classmates at Otago are extremely friendly, as are the locals, making it easy to make new friends. Many students also take advantage of the many opportunities to experience extreme sports such as bungee jumping.
