Thailand: Chiang Mai
Term
Fall, Spring
Dates
Aug-Dec, Jan-May
Thailand's cultural heart awaits you in Chiang Mai, a 700-year-old city caught between two worlds. Thai tradition and customs are still very much alive in this city and they happily co-exist with the newly modern Thailand. In 1800, a moat and huge brick walls were built around the city to protect it from invasion, but they now protect the old city from any high-rise development. The city is most famous for having more than 300 Buddhist temples, and one of the most holy and scenic, Wat Doi Suthep, sits atop the mountain that overlooks the city. Chiang Mai is rife with festivals and is definitely the handicraft capital of Thailand with beautiful woodwork, jewelry and ceramics. The city also has a vibrant nightlife with many excellent restaurants and a lively music scene.
*Academics
Chiang Mai University, established in 1964, was northern Thailand's first institution of higher education and first provincial university. With a student enrollment of 36,000 students, the public research university boasts a vibrant campus and student district adjacent to shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The main campus is located at the base of Doi Suthep, just five kilometers from the city center, and is spread over 725 acres. Students will have the opportunity to live on campus with a Thai roommate, and enjoy the university's sporting facilities and numerous cultural clubs.
Students will enjoy two 5-day field trips during the semester in addition to their coursework at CMU. One trip involves experiencing traditional life in a hill-tribe village living in a villager's dwelling, eating traditional food and experiencing village life. The second trip will explore the three historic kingdoms of Thailand.
* Accommodation
Students will live off campus at UniLoft, which is less than a 5-minute walk to campus. Students will share a room with an English-speaking Thai student from CMU who will assist with assimilating into Thai culture. Each apartment has built-in furniture, walk-in closet, refrigerator, air conditioner, TV, and bathroom, and the complex also has a fitness center and pools. In addition, the UniLoft Hub also offers convenience stores, restaurants, bakeries, laundry and ATM machines.
Students begin their program with a three-day intensive orientation in Bangkok. While studying at the prestigious Chiang Mai University, students will have numerous opportunities to immerse themselves in Thai culture. Students can enroll in Thai language classes, live with a Thai roommate, volunteer at a local school or temple, and study with students and professors from around Southeast Asia. There are also several cultural excursions led by the local resident director, in addition to the 5-day hill tribe stay and Three Kingdoms of Thailand trip.
