Spend your spring break in the Bahamas! Marine Biology and Marine Geology of the Bahamas is a hands-on field course that focuses on learning about the marine organisms and environments near a tropical island (San Salvador, Bahamas). The course is open to students in any major from any college in the U.S. There are no prerequisites but students should have successfully completed one college-level natural science lab or field course.
Most students who enroll in this course attend the SUNY Colleges at Brockport and Geneseo and Onondaga Community College. They receive 20 hours of lecture-based, pre-departure instruction during the spring semester (1 credit) and then complete 9 days of field work during spring break on San Salvador (3 credits). There are no graded assignments during the classroom portion of the course in the U.S. Attendance at spring class sessions is mandatory for Brockport, OCC and Geneseo students but not for students at other colleges who receive 3 credits for the portion of the course taught at San Salvador.
Students at other colleges should contact the Program Director for instructions on how to complete activities required in the spring semester. The final grade for the course is based on work at San Salvador where students will complete a comprehensive field notebook and conduct a field research project.
The program takes place at the Bahamian Field Station, San Salvador, the Bahamas. San Salvador is at the eastern end of a chain of 700 islands and cays that form the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
