Spain
Share |

Location
Spain: Alicante

Term
Summer

  • Description

    Summer-long service learning opportunities allow you to gain professional experience while improving your Spanish. Service learning projects allow you access to the work culture and daily life of local citizens, often hidden to students studying abroad, and to more fully integrate into the local culture.

    When applying for a service learning project, you have the benefit of specifying what you would like your project to look like. Spanish Studies Abroad will strive to match you with the best available placement to help you integrate into alicantino work culture.

    Service learning projects focus on engagement in the local culture through community service in a local organization. The curricula of the Alicante Service Learning programs are centered around your individual work experience. Complementary courses help you to work through the linguistic and cultural challenges you may run into while in the field.

    Spanish Studies Abroad will work hard to match you with an appropriate placement to meet your interests. Students have completed placements in a variety of fields including legal offices, Greenpeace, television production, journalism, education, and more.

    Program Features:

    * Opportunity to gain professional experience abroad
    * Language courses and cultural guidance to support your placement
    * Homestays with local families
    * Local speaking partners
    * All inclusive day and overnight travel excursions
    * Onsite Resident Director and Activities Coordinator

  • Highlights

    Alicante, the jewel of the Costa Blanca, is a charming harbor city that is both tranquil in its coastal climate and vibrant with modern Spanish life. The culture, architecture, language, and people have all been shaped by the region's rich history of sea merchants and conquerors.

    Our students in Alicante study onsite at Universidad de Alicante (UA), twenty minutes outside of the city's center. Established in 1979 to carry on the traditions and academic integrity of its predecessor, Universidad de Orihuela (1545-1834), UA is one of the most innovative and modern universities in Spain. Students enjoy the convenience of modern classrooms and facilities on a campus of green lawns and Mediterranean gardens.

    Through university coursework, homestays with native families, and multiple cross-cultural opportunities, students will find Spanish Studies Abroad in Alicante to be a highly immersive and integrated study abroad experience.

  • Spanish Studies Abroad's Mission Statement

    The mission of Spanish Studies Abroad is to promote our students' in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries, through specifically designed academically rigorous university-level programs. We consider all of our students to be willing to cross cultural boundaries, to live as members of another culture, and to thus learn about others as they learn about themselves. In accordance with our mission to encourage our students to cross cultural boundaries, Spanish Studies promotes equal opportunities within our programs and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual's race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We believe in educating students on cultural tolerance and sensitivity, acceptance of differences, inclusiveness, and how diversity is viewed in other cultures.
