Spanish Studies Abroad in Seville offers this 3 1/2 week summer seminar specifically designed for teachers of Spanish as a second language and university students preparing to teach who wish to develop professionally through deepening their intercultural knowledge and experiences. Spanish Studies is known for academic excellence which begins with our commitment to our students' intellectual, cultural and personal growth. We bring this commitment to life through our strong and broad curriculum, Spanish-Only Policy, our small classes and our superior instructional staff.
In this course, students focus on creating methods and materials to develop communicative competence in their students and introduce the linguistic and socio-cultural aspects of Spanish to their classroom. "Culture in the Classroom" is offered only during the second term of the summer program in Seville, Spain. The class meets for 60 contact hours for a total of (4) course credits (graduate credit available for qualified candidates, please contact Spanish Studies Abroad for details).
Spanish Studies Abroad awards up to USD 2,500 in scholarships to students enrolled in our programs. All students are encouraged to apply. Spanish Studies has also created the Alumni Scholar Fund which awards stipends up to USD 1,000 to every student choosing embark on an additional cross-cultural program with Spanish Studies Abroad. Discounts are available to current teachers wishing to enroll in this seminar.
Not only will this interactive class give participants the opportunity to improve upon their own curriculum, but also to develop their own linguistic skills and understanding of Spanish culture. Through living in a host family and participating in cultural excursions, participants integrate experience with pedagogy. In addition to keeping a journal, participants compile a portfolio of authentic materials and incorporate them into exercises and activities for the classroom to encourage progress in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as cultural perception. Students also deepen their knowledge of the Internet and its applications in teaching Spanish.
Your seminar takes place in two classic turn-of-the-century mansions in the heart of Seville's commercial and social district. Our Center is a short walk from the University of Seville and some of Spain's most glorious and historic sites. These include the Catedral and Giralda (the symbol of Seville), the Torre del Oro, the Alcazar palace, many museums and the beautiful Guadalquivir River. Seville is also located within an hour and a half of the Costa del Sol and its sunny beaches. Study tours led by Spanish Studies Abroad are included at no extra cost.
The Center has been a social and cultural gathering place for both Americans and Sevillanos since 1969. Each year, more than two hundred Spaniards study English at the Center and participate in Intercambios (language-exchanges) with American students. In addition to organizing the Intercambio program, the Center actively promotes regular interaction of Spanish and American students by organizing social events and cultural activities such as outings to the theater, festivals and carnivals, art exhibits, concerts of classical and contemporary music, video presentations, and joint fiestas. Shared library facilities, study rooms, lounges and common areas at the Center together with home stays give American students an unparalleled opportunity to learn about the culture and language of Spain first hand.

The mission of Spanish Studies Abroad is to promote our students' in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries, through specifically designed academically rigorous university-level programs. We consider all of our students to be willing to cross cultural boundaries, to live as members of another culture, and to thus learn about others as they learn about themselves. In accordance with our mission to encourage our students to cross cultural boundaries, Spanish Studies promotes equal opportunities within our programs and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual's race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We believe in educating students on cultural tolerance and sensitivity, acceptance of differences, inclusiveness, and how diversity is viewed in other cultures.
