The 18th and 19th century saw female dress go through many changes in shape. From panniers and sack backs of the 18th century to high waists and see-through dresses or large skirts held out by wide steel cages.
The course offers you an introduction to 18th & 19th century female period dress. You will look at the various changes in style, cut and construction through the different periods and how dress and clothing accessories contributed to the changing shape of the female body. Through practical demonstrations you will then be taken through the various stages of cutting toiles of a range of female bodices and skirts on the stand and making them ready for a fitting. You will be able to explore both original and modern techniques in drafting a pattern, using and working with appropriate fabric and using specialist techniques to achieve the correct fit and period look.
