An introductory course for students interested in male period clothing, who wish to learn specialist skills and methods. The course offers an opportunity to look in-depth at male coats of the 18th Century.
This course will start with a basic understanding of the history of male dress from the late 16th Century to the 18th Century, exploring the developments of male dress and the beginning of tailoring. We will look at the advance of tailoring methods through the 18th Century and the changes in style, cut and construction. Through practical demonstrations you will be taken through the various stages of drafting, cutting and making a part coat. You will be able to explore both the traditional and modern techniques of construction and how to deal with the pleated skirts and the difficulty of fitting a coat with so few seams.
