  • Description

The Craft of Watercolor is a a two week long workshop to be held at the Aegean Center on the island of Paros, Greece from June 10 to June 24, 2012.

The workshop will focus on methods of developing watercolor painting through observation and with an emphasis on formal painting and drawing techniques.

From quick and spontaneous ink sketches to finished and developed paintings there is a range of watercolor painting approaches.

Students will meet every day to study basic watercolor fundamentals and to further their understanding of handling the fluidity, transparency and versatility of the medium. The core color concepts of tone, temperature and intensity will be explored as well as the study of color theory by focusing upon the mixing of color physically and optically through manipulating and layering of paint.

As drawing is integral to the structure and design of watercolor, students will study basic drawing concepts, specifically how tone, brush stroke and line can convey form, space, light, shadow and texture. Over the course of the program, lessons will concentrate on the formal compositional and expressive qualities of a developed painting. In order to experiment and practice in the course lessons students will also have frequent opportunites for organized plein air (open air) painting excursions around the island of Paros.

Along with excursions around various parts of Paros there will also be sessions to paint and draw from a model. The course will hold group critiques to provide feedback and discourse on each participants' works. The program will also offer scheduled talks and lectures from visiting professors. At the end of the two week session the course will conclude with an exhibition of student works at the Aegean Center.

The Craft of Watercolor is limited to eight participants. We welcome all skill levels.
