Description

Temple's spring semester in Spain program is based at the University of Oviedo in the province of Asturias, one of the most culturally significant regions in Spain. The program is designed for students who have completed at least four semesters of college-level Spanish (see website for details) and are committed to further developing their Spanish language skills. Courses are conducted in Spanish, and students live with Spanish host families for the duration of the program.

Study abroad participants are enrolled in the Cursos de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros program, which for more than 20 years has offered courses in Spanish language and culture to international students. An integral part of the university, the center offers a broad range of courses, conducted in Spanish, at the intermediate and advanced levels. All program courses are held in Oviedo at the university's humanities campus, El Milán, which has classrooms, administrative offices, as well as a library, video library, and language laboratory.

Oviedo is situated in central Asturias at the foot of the Naranco hills, 21 miles from the coast. Oviedo is a lively city with a population of more than 220,000. While the city has an impressive old-town center, museums, and significant historic sites, it is also a modern city. As there are relatively few English-speaking visitors, Oviedo is also an excellent location to improve language skills. The University of Oviedo has a notable presence within the city.

Highlights

The first several days of the program take place in Madrid, where faculty conduct an orientation program, and students have the opportunity to explore Spain's capital city and its environs before traveling to Oviedo to begin classes. The period in Madrid also includes day excursions to nearby cities.
