4-week course
There is more than one TESOL certification course offered within the city limits of Los Angeles, each of which offers a general teaching certificate to students; but there is only one University of Cambridge-accredited CELTA New York.
The CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching for Adults) course is the most internationally recognized ESL teacher training - TEFL or TESL - course in the world and is very highly regarded by employers in the U.S. and overseas. It is accredited by the University of Cambridge and successful candidates are awarded certification from Cambridge. The CELTA is a hands-on practical course that equips trainees with the necessary skills to teach a range of lessons to students of any nationality or language.
We have a maximum of 18 teachers on each course, which ensures individual attention is given to everyone throughout the course. During one half of the day there are workshops and seminars which cover issues relevant to teaching such as grammar, how to teach vocabulary, methodology, literacy, etc. In the other half, we run classes specifically for students learning English. These are taught by our trainee teachers who teach a minimum of nine times during the course, and get to observe a good number more lessons taught by their peers and other experienced teachers. Each taught lesson is also observed by one of our qualified tutors who gives extensive feedback on each lesson. This practical teaching component of the course is the element that schools require their teachers to have undergone to ensure that their staff has at least had a foundation in hands-on teaching and the theories that align with classroom techniques.
Applicants should have either a GED or a high-school diploma.
