This program will explore the road to democracy in the Islamic World, including road blocks to the formation of democratic governments, such as ethno-nationalism, competing ideologies, fundamentalism, corruption, conflicts, and cultural-historical factors. The role of the United States as a force for promoting democracy in the Islamic world will be a central focus of the program.
This course is inspired by the mass demonstrations against authoritarian rule in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, and Syria, as well as major protests in Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, and Oman that occurred in early 2011. These demonstrations, which were organized by young people, provide the United States the opportunity to show support for democratic reform and human rights, but they also carry the risk of empowering Islamic movements which are opposed to American policy throughout the Islamic World. Turkey is an ideal location for staging this program, because of its position as a Western-style and secular democratic state with a largely Muslim population.
Chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2010, Istanbul literally straddles the continents of Europe and Asia. Similar to New York or London in its energy, diversity of peoples and distinct neighborhoods, this cosmopolitan mega-city will amaze and delight. Here you will find every kind of cuisine, a café culture buzzing at all hours of the day or night, and music in the streets as well as in clubs and concert halls. The city has been a veritable melting pot of cultures, traditions and lifestyles stretching back over 2000 years. So there is always something new (or something ancient and grand) to explore.
