  • Description

The course will engage students in debate about historical and contemporary issues in Ireland North and South, which is part of an increasingly interdependent world. It will help to understand the relationship between historical context, policy making processes and cultural, domestic policy, economic and foreign policy behavior with respect to the United States and European Union. It leads students through different aspects of Ireland's history and culture and facilitates extending both intellectual and emotional knowledge of its students. This course shows an engagement with the world, locally, nationally and globally.

  • Highlights

Part of the current issues in Irish politics and economics is the boom and bust of the Celtic Tiger model and how the European Union got involved. Another part of the course is an inquiry into the treatment of Travellers/ Gypsies in Ireland. A third part of this Summer School course will deal in Belfast with the violence of the last violence. Will the peace hold this time? Has unification become a reality due to guns and bombs? How do the victims come to terms with the past?
