  • Description

The role of musicians as generational spokesmen and social narrators is something the media have resented since the explosion of rock n' roll in the 1950s. This resentment has endured over the decades resulting in a cultural and power-based tug-of war-over the minds of the young, the rights of the artisans and the laws of the land.

  • Highlights

How and why were The Beatles, members of the Rolling Stones, David Bowie (as Ziggy Stardust), The Sex Pistols and even the Spice Girls praised and/or pilloried by the print and broadcast media? What does their treatment by the media say about the United Kingdom's relationship with celebrity, national identity, class-consciousness, creativity and its own social history? And, despite its name, why does the music industry do so little to protect the talents that represent it globally?
