SKIP is a charity working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic program focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. It is our aim to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.
There are over 300 children between the ages of four and eighteen years old currently enrolled in the education program, which makes it the largest department in SKIP. We aim to maintain an exciting, stimulating and engaging learning environment. Our aim is not to replace the local education system, but rather supplement it. Following a curriculum designed especially for the children at SKIP, we provide classes in subjects such as reading comprehension, Math and Computing.
We are currently looking for English teachers to teach in both our primary and secondary programs.
The English teaching program:
Our team of English teachers usually numbers around six people. We conduct lessons in classes at the SKIP centre, and also in a local public school.
We take a dynamic approach to teaching the children and so lessons are activity-based and interactive. There are lots of games and songs to keep the children engaged so they can enjoy learning in a fun environment. These methods differ greatly from those used in Peru and it is extremely rewarding to see the children keen to study English and learn more.
Position:
Under supervision of the English Teaching Coordinator and following a written curriculum, volunteers will plan and deliver lessons with an assistant. Team teaching is used in the larger classes. Volunteers will be working 35-37 hours per week.

A level of Spanish speaking ability would be of use although not essential. However prospective volunteers would be encouraged to learn as much Spanish as they can prior to arrival as it will enhance their volunteering experience.
USD200 - USD550 per month depending on the duration of stay.
Financial contribution:
We do ask volunteers to make a contribution to the charity in return for volunteering. We know it can seem a bit strange to 'pay to work' but this is how we fund the charity. Please see our annual report for a breakdown of our funding and expenditure - 59% of our annual budget currently comes from the volunteer contributions and additional fundraising done by current and ex volunteers.
Accommodation is provided and the cost is included in the donation - this ranges from GBP350 to GBP125 per month.
We are happy for volunteers to fundraise the contribution and there is more information about this on the website along with some information about possible grant opportunities.
