SUNY New Paltz Study Abroad program in Urbino, Italy is conducted by the University of Urbino, a fully accredited university that issues all transcripts. Students are expected to carry a full-time academic load (12-15 credit hours per semester) and will be offered a variety of courses to choose from toward their degree.
All participants enroll in special intensive Italian language courses for foreign students, taught by experienced, native-born faculty from the University of Urbino. In addition, all participants are required to take three-year long regular University of Urbino courses to be selected under advisement. In some courses tutoring will be available. Courses are generally taken in the Facolta di Lettere e Filosofia and the Facolta di Lingue e Letterature Straniere. Under certain circumstances, students may also be able to take courses offered by other faculties. Enrollment in regular university courses provides students with a total immersion experience.
The program is based in Urbino, the birthplace of the painter Raffaello and the site of a university that was founded in the 16th century. The New York Times has described Urbino as '..a time capsule tucked away in hills near the Adriatic Coast, (offering) a better idea of what life in the Renaissance must have been like than all the monuments of Florence and Rome. Urbino is Italy at its best.
The Urbino Program is fortunate to count on the services of Ms. Federica Rusciadelli as its resident director. Ms. Rusciadelli is a long-time resident of Urbino, who has taught courses in the New Paltz Summer Urbino Program and also teaches Italian courses for foreigners at the University of Urbino. She will be the primary contact for SUNY students in Urbino.
