SUNY New Paltz - London Art Seminar

England

Location
England: London

Term
Winter

Dates
Early January

  • Description

London is the center of commercial and artistic life in Great Britain. It is justly famous for its parks, monuments, museum, concert halls, and theatres. It is truly one of the greatest cities in the world. Students in the program have the opportunity to study and explore this city, enjoying the almost unlimited possibilities of this cultural center. The seminar takes place in and around the city of London. Excursions may be taken outside the city (in previous years students have visited Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor Castle or Bath). Other informal visits are planned, including walking tours of London's famous parks and markets.

The program is a two week seminar in London in early January, covering the historic traditions and contemporary trends inherent in British Art. Through a series of visits to London's major museums, art galleries, alternative spaces and other cultural institutions, students will gain a deeper insight into the distinctive nature of British Art and Culture. Studio visits, interviews with artists and administrators, and field lectures are also planned to offer an inside perspective on what it means to practice art in London. Seminar participants will meet regularly in the program residence to discuss and critically evaluate the art scene. Excursions both inside and outside of the city are planned as well. Past excursions have included: a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and attending a Shakespearean play with the London Theatre Seminar.
