Special Needs School Beijing was founded in 1874 and now it has a history of 134 years. It is located near a beautiful river called Kunyu River. It is not only the earliest special educational school in China but also the unique special educational school for the visually impaired in Beijing. It has now developed into a comprehensive school for visually impaired students, which includes kindergarten for kids before, special-needs class, primary and secondary schools, high school section (including senior high, intermediate vocational school for acupuncture and massage and piano tuning vocational high school) and teachers' training program. The school campus is tidy and beautiful. It is equipped with modern facilities that satisfy the need of visually impaired students. It is a paradise both in living and studying for the visually impaired students.

In working with Chinese blind children the challenges are not just to help them but to do so without them feeling as though they are incapable of doing things for themselves. In addition you should also be in a position to treat them in exactly the same manner as you would a Chinese child whose vision is not impaired.

* Teaching English
If you are a fully qualified teacher then you may wish to specialize in terms of the areas in which you teach. If you wish to work with Chinese children who are visually impaired or blind then you could perhaps think of working in a school that deals specifically with children suffering from these conditions.

In working in such an environment there is no specialist training required other than being a qualified teacher. A level of teaching experience is obviously expected but there is no limit beyond this as to whether you can or cannot work with such children.

* Teaching Assistant
Sometimes referred to as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) a Teaching Assistant may offer one to one assistance in the same way as they might offer assistance to an able bodied child. This assistance may include helping them with lessons and also helping with the preparation of classroom materials.

* Criminal Records Bureau (CRB Check)
This is a mandatory check that all Volunteers must be subject to prior to being made a place of the project. The purpose of this check is to ensure that any individual wishing to work with children, the elderly or individuals considered to be vulnerable are eligible to do so and that they do not have any criminal convictions that may constitute working with such groups as a risk. Every Volunteer must pass this check successfully.
