The Discover Tanzania Trip gives participants the opportunity to travel and work in East Africa's largest country. This 28 day discovery tour comprises of a combination of voluntary work within the local communities, visiting rural districts of Tanzania to compare the lifestyles and a chance to meet the Big 5 on safari in northern Tanzania. This package offers participants the chance to immerse themselves into Tanzanian culture, to experience life in Africa whilst helping communities by volunteering their assistance in various projects. Once participants have completed their much appreciated hard work helping the communities they are given the opportunity to meet the Masaai of Tanzania and maybe even get face to face with a pack of lions on one of their game drives. No doubt you will meet lots of like minded people out there participating in the same program. The discovery trip of Tanzania aims to benefit all concerned as we put a great deal of effort establishing the links between the locals and the volunteers to get the best possible outcome.

Highlights

Discover Tanzania Proposed Itinerary;

* Day 1 - Upon arrival one of our ground coordinators will greet you at the Dar es Salaam International airport then transfer you to a hotel located within the city.
* Day 2 - After breakfast you will be required to attend a short meeting with Sub Saharan adventures local staff. The meeting will be a general question/answer session, including a discussion on program itinerary, general orientation concerning the history, culture, tradition, and other important issues including health & safety. You will also be briefed on information concerning the orphanage construction project, as well as an inspection of the site. Participants will be spending the next 5 days working on this project with the local people to help construct an orphanage.
* Day 3-7 - Nature of work
Work on the construction project is physically demanding. Tasks include digging, hauling bricks, placing rods, moving blocks, as well as mixing cement, sand, and gravel. Volunteers work will also include assisting the masons & the carpenter(s). Volunteers may also be asked to help with other construction related activities.

Proposed work schedule:
7:10am - Breakfast
8.00am - 10.00am : Work on the construction project
10:15am - 10:30am: Break
10:30am - 12:0pm: Work on the construction project
12:00pm - 2:00pm: Lunch break and rest
2:00pm - 3:30pm: Work on the construction project

After 3:30pm, participants can either work in construction project till 5:00pm or work in the orphanage. The orphanage includes teaching informal English and organising extra-curricular activities such as singing, dancing, playing with the children, drawing, painting, organising games etc.

** If you are not able to participate in physical work, you can work in the children's orphanage or alternatively teach in the local school.

* Day 8 - You will embark on a full day trip to Bagamoyo, a popular tourist destination in Tanzania. Bagamoyo, 75 miles north of Dar es Salaam, is an important cultural heritage site for Tanzania. Famous for its slave and ivory trade, Bagamoyo was also the first capital of Tanzania under German Colonial rule until it shifted in power in 1892 to Dar es Salaam. In Bagamoyo, you will visit the headquarters of German East Africa. Here stands the fort where the slaves were kept before being shipped to Zanzibar. Nearby is also the oldest mission in Central and East Africa. You will get to visit the slave museum in the centre of town which tells their story as well as that of Dr. Livingstone. If that isn't enough, outside the museum standing tall is one of the oldest and largest Baobab trees in East Africa.
* Day 9-13 - You will return back to the orphanage and continue your work on the construction project.
* Day 14 - Today is your chance to participate in a full day's exploration of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania largest city. In this beautiful city, you will begin your tour by passing alongside the cities infamous clock tower along the Askari monument, visit the national museum and take in the botanical gardens. This trip also covers tours of the historical state house, the fish market, the secretarial building, the Luther house, White Fathers house, and Dar es Salaam's harbour known as the business gateway for the East and Central African countries. Participants will also visit the RC Cathedral and the business district (located downtown) before visiting Kariakoo Market.
* Day 15-20 - You will return back to the orphanage and continue your work on the construction project.
* Day 21 - You will be given a tour of Mbenzi village farm. Mbenzi farm is the largest farm within the Dar es Salaam district. This farm is within 45 minutes walking distance of the project area. Participants are given the opportunity to walk through the local villages and given the chance to observe the beautiful landscape of this rural area. Upon arrival at the farm, participants can observe the local ways of raising their farm animals. Some of which include cows, pigs, and horses. This farm also boasts a large mango plantation which participants will be able to test the produce! To finish off the day our representatives will organise a picnic for all to enjoy in this amazing rural village setting.
* Day 22 - This is when you begin your true discovery of Tanzania. You will leave Dar es Salaam in the morning to travel to Arusha (Northern Tanzania). The journey will take 7-8 hours of which you can just relax and take in the sights and smells as you travel through this vast country. Your overnight stay will be at a hotel in Arusha.
* Day 23 - After breakfast a guide will pick up volunteers for a safari to the Maasai Village. Here, participants will explore the world famous traditions and culture of the Maasai, observing homes, ways of living and their farming systems. Your overnight stay will be at a Hotel in Arusha.
* Day 24 - After breakfast, the group will drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara. Lunch will be provided for a full day's tour. Your overnight stay will be at the Kigony camp site. Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of only 318sq km (123 sq miles); its diverse terrain boasts an even more diverse example of mammals and birds. The park includes much of Lake Manyara, some 60 km (38 miles) long as well as the Rift Valley escarpment. The park is well known for its tree climbing lions which can be found lazing on branches of the acacia trees. In addition there are a large number of elephants, herds of buffalo and plenty of leopards. The lake is a favourite place for pink flamingos and wading birds. This area is home to the Maasai people, who you will meet frequently on your tour.
* Day 25 - After breakfast the group will drive from Lake Manyara to the Serengeti, enjoying a picnic lunch and various opportunities to see even more wild game en route. Your dinner and overnight stay at will be at the Soronera Camp.
* Day 26 - You will wake up early in the morning, witnessing the 'Sunrise Game Drive' and return back to camp for breakfast. This trip includes a full day drive/tour of the Serengeti and back to Ngorongoro via Olduvai Gorge. We organise dinner and the overnight stay at the campsite.
* Day 27 - After breakfast, the group will drive to the Ngorongoro crater for a full day game drive with lunch provided, followed by a drive back to Arusha in evening where you will spend the night.
* Day 28 - Return from Arusha to Dar es Salaam concluding the tour and program.

Additional Information; the project will conclude once the tour operator drops off volunteers at respective hotels, the bus station, or the airport.
