Excellent four weeks in Okinawa

I'm visiting my sister and family in Okinawa.Having a tourist visa meant that I could not officially work. But I wanted to get out and get involved with activities on the Island. So I came across 'Teachers in Okinawa' via google search Engine, got in contact with Mike. He set up an internship program for me with some schools on the Island.
Looking back at it all, in my last week of this internship and at the third school, I can say for a fact that, I have had a tremendous experience working in Japan. I had the opportunity to inspire the young Japanese kids. Teaching them a foreign language and also representing the world outside of Japan to the kids. In my case, it was the first time they had seen an African. Working with the Japanese who are a very cultured and reserved people was literally as smooth as can be. we often handled the Language barrier very well, using mobile phone applications for translations while having conversations.
I recommend this program to individuals looking to live and work in Japan. The program afforded me the opportunity to gain some international exposure and work experience. It has Prepared me to be an 'Assistant Language Teacher'. It also gave me an insight to the Japanese work culture and how this industrious way of life is being inculcated in the kids at a very young age. You will certainly love your time here. Mike is a wonderful boss and he will look out for you as he has done for me and many others.

Teaching English and experiencing a unique culture in Okinawa

Mike Holland, the director of the program, connects the interns with the schools or companies he has connections with in Okinawa. For me, this was a one month program. I interned the first week at a preschool. For the other three weeks, I went to Gaigo, a junior college that taught only foreign languages. This experience has been very fun as well as culturally enriching. The people in Okinawa are incredibly kind, accommodating, and just fun to be around. The culture in Okinawa itself is fascinatingly different from the mainland. If your goal is to teach English in Japan and do something like JET, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, then this internship gives you direct experience. During the course of my program, I have dealt with preschoolers, college students, adults, and foreigners all under the Japanese system of education. When I apply for JET next year, I believe that this experience will make me extremely competitive.
