  • Description

The light of Tuscany holds a particular spell over artists and travelers, with its rarefied quality and how it strikes the varied landscapes whether in cities or in the rolling countryside. This 6 credit program offered by FUA is designed to explore the unique light and its effect on the architecture and landscapes of Tuscany. Students and Program leaders travel together as a community of scholars - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for one week of onsite shooting in Tuscany and then work closely on a daily basis in Florence for another session (three weeks). While traveling, students will be attending daily classes on mornings and work on group and specific individual assignments on afternoons.

Program Details and Academic Course Work

Travel Research Week in Tuscany: Students will spend an entire week onsite in Tuscany. Daily lectures and photography in the field in unique areas, have the purpose of offering a full immersion into the qualities of Tuscan light that have inspired painters, photographers, writers, and filmmakers. The course will continue for the subsequent 3 weeks in Florence, the capital of Tuscany. Lessons will take place at the PALAZZI campuses in the city center.

Light of Florence and Tuscany: (DI PH LF 310) Dedicated to the awareness and application of natural light, this course introduces students to the concept of using light to beautify and enhance their photographs. Through a series of practical exercises and individualized projects students explore the quality and attributes of the natural light found exclusively in Florence and the region of Tuscany. Furthermore, students are made aware of the cultural and historical significance of Florence and Tuscany by drawing comparisons between contemporary and historical artists whose work has gained inspiration from the region's unique ambience. A digital camera of 5.0-mega pixels minimum with an optical zoom lens of at least 3X is required. A 35 mm traditional reflex camera can also be helpful.

  • Highlights

The academic context of this program is realized largely through formal lectures, independent study and small-group work. Thus, during a study-abroad term of this nature, much of the learning happens experientially. Students will succeed to the extent that they focus clearly on their own learning outcomes, guided by the program objectives & instructors. By the end of the study-abroad term, students should have a comprehensive understanding and confidence with both the visual and technical media . They should be able to communicate something with an image that presents their own worldview and personal identity.
