    The aim of the Certificate in Italian Studies is to provide an introduction to the rich and diverse culture of Italy by investigating it through a mixture of disciplines and themes, such as history, cinema, art, and literature. The certificate is ideal for professionals in the arts or for business executives who are seeking intensive language training and a deeper understanding of Italian culture.

    The Certificate in Italian Studies consists of five courses totalling 15-16 credits, including two mandatory courses and three electives.

    Program Courses:

    a. Obligatory Courses: Two courses (6-7 CH). Students must complete one course in the Italian language. A placement exam will determine the level of each student. Italian Language courses will be chosen from the following courses depending on the placement exam results:

    DHM-ITA/1010 - Beginning Italian I (4 CH)
    DHM-ITA/1020 - Beginning Italian II (4 CH)
    DHM-ITA/2010 - Intermediate Italian I (3 CH)
    DHM-ITA/2020 - Intermediate Italian II (3 CH)

    And

    DHM-ICL/1500 - Survey on Italian Culture (3 CH)

    b. Elective Courses: Three courses (9 CH). Students must choose one course from the below three disciplines:

    * Italian Literature
    DHM-ITA/2100 - Italian Literature I
    DHM-ITA/2110 - Italian Literature II
    DHM-ITA/3100 - Great Italian Writers of the Twentieth Century
    DHM-ITA/3110 - 19th Century Italian Poetry
    DHM-ITA/3700 - Great Italian Poets of the Twentieth Century

    * Italian and European History
    DHM-HIS/2330 - Renaissance and Reformation Europe (W)
    DHM-HIS/3200 - Italy from the Risorgimento to the First World War (1815-1918)
    DHM-HIS/3300 - Italy from Mussolini to the Crisis of the First Republic (1918 to present)

    * Italian Art and Cinema
    DFA-FLS/2100 - The History of Italian Cinema
    DFA-FLS/2150 - Recent Italian Cinema
    DHM-ARH/1010 - Art History Survey I (Ancient through Medieval)
    DHM-ARH/1020 - Art History Survey II (Renaissance through 21st Century)
    DHM-ARH/2500 - Italian Renaissance Art
    DHM-ARH/2600 - Italian Baroque Art
    DHM-ARH/2700 - 19th-Century Art
    DHM-ARH/2800 - Introduction to Modern Art: 1900-1945
    DHM-ARH/2900 - Art Since 1945
