Examining the motivations of both historical and contemporary art collectors and their impact on the market and on art practice, this course gives students the opportunity to investigate changing taste and historical trends in collecting, the economics of collecting (supply and demand), connoisseurship, and aesthetics. The class considers the impact of the art dealer, auction house, and art advisor on collecting: how they create new markets and the means by which they cultivate the next generation of collectors. The course also addresses practical issues, such as sources and resources for collectors, how to define and build a collection, how to care for a collection, research resources for the collector, and issues of provenance.
Located in the centre of Manhattan students at the Institute have easy access to New York's rich cultural and historical resources as well as to many of the world's leading galleries and museums.
Through Sotheby's auction house, we provide students with privileged access to pre-sale viewings, seminars with experts and handling sessions in which art objects are examined in detail. In addition, students visit the many commercial galleries, artists' studios, and museums that have made New York the centre of the international art world and such a unique and vibrant place to study art.
