Location: Italy
Program Duration: 2-4 weeks
Dates: July 10 - 31, 2010
Students will immerse themselves in Italian life and language, and while learning about Florence, the city of Michelangelo and Brunelleschi. Excursions include travel to the Etruscan coast and medieval Assisi as the classroom goes on the road to learn about Italy's rich and varied history.
Activities on the program are designed to integrate with the coursework, as well as to give students a chance to experience Italy outside of the classroom. CET will arrange a host of weekly lectures, extracurricular classes and activities, including visits to historical and cultural sites in and around Florence. All activities aim to show students a side of Italy that they might not be able to see on their own.
Activities will include some, but not all of the following, to be determined by on site staff during your stay:
* Florence bike tour
* Italian cooking class
* Trip to Siena
* Evening guided walk at the Cave di Maiano
* Trip in the Chianti area and visit of the San Galgano Abbey, where the legend of the sword in the stone was born
* Visit an agriturismo, a farm that welcomes tourists to experience or learn about different farming techniques, from making cheese to growing olives
* Visit a shop that produces leather goods and learn how different products are made
* Visit the Boboli Gardens
The Smithsonian Studies Abroad program in Florence is designed with three trips, introducing students to sites of historical and cultural importance. These trips are built around the academic schedule, so that students still meet for the required number of contact hours. In addition to the day trip to Siena students will travel to the Etruscan Coast and Assisi.
