Teaching Responsibilities
Though all volunteers are required to use the textbooks and syllabi for each class as a guide, most importantly, volunteers are encouraged to use their own teaching styles, methods, ideas and creativity for their classes. Teachers have the freedom to design and conduct lessons as they see appropriate using skills, knowledge, and personal qualities to develop lessons.

All teachers are responsible for the following:

1. Creation of class lesson plans based on the recommended textbooks, and creation of syllabi for each class
2. Development, assignment, and grading of daily homework, quizzes and projects
3. Development and grading of quarterly study guides and quarterly exams
4. Recording of attendance, homework, participation and behavior, quizzes and projects and quarterly exams
5. Meet with parents when requested

Schedule
Our Institution runs Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 1:15 PM. Teachers must be at school by 6:45 AM and stay until the end of the school day. Most teachers find that they have to stay later to plan lessons, grade, or tutor students.

The school also observes a number of national holidays with vacation days. During these breaks, volunteers are free to travel within Honduras or throughout Central America.

Highlights

What started off as a kindergarten with a dozen students has now become a full bilingual kindergarten, elementary and secondary school educating over 100 students from pre-kindergarten up to 7th grade. Since its founding, the school has expanded and the staff too , we are hoping to expand near future as soon as we gather the resources. Thanks to contributions, we have been able to to keep our tuition extremely low. We also continue to offer scholarships to a large portion of our students, extending the benefits of a bilingual education to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend such a school. Smart Kids and Coral Springs Bilingual School is a unique gift in San Pedro Sula and Villanueva, giving children the chance for a better future by learning English.

Qualifications

Being a long-term volunteer teacher at Smart Kids and Coral Spring Bilingual School requires a commitment of eight-ten months to one full school year. It is for independent, self-guided, self-reliant individuals who are capable of making the best of limited resources and adapting to circumstances. In addition to living and working in a new country, teachers will be adjusting to teaching in a Honduran classroom. Although you will find support from the school Principal and your fellow teachers, you will often have to guide yourself. Most importantly, volunteers report that their experience has a positive impact on students and themselves, and that their time here, is extremely rewarding.
