Explore issues of multiculturalism, ethnicity, and identity in the context of South Africa, from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
South Africa is truly a multicultural society, with 11 national languages and numerous ethnic groups. While South Africans have seen tremendous change since the first multiracial elections in 1994, they anticipate a long road before achieving the stated goal of equality.
Cape Town, the program base, was one of the first South African cities to voluntarily promote racial integration. In a typical semester, students complete four homestays —each providing the opportunity to meet and interact with South Africans from different geographic and ethnic backgrounds. The strong emphasis on the homestay as experiential learning complements lectures, discussions, field-based assignments, and excursions to provide a multidisciplinary analysis of the country.
This program features several homestays designed to introduce students firsthand to some of South Africa's cultural diversity: four weeks with Xhosa-speaking families and one week with both Afrikaans-speaking and English-speaking families in the greater Cape Town area; one week with families in the rural Eastern Cape; and one week with families in the picturesque village of Stellenbosch in the winelands region just outside of Cape Town.
The program includes educational excursions to the Eastern Cape, Stellenbosch, Western Cape province, and visits to rural areas.

A pioneer in experiential, field-based study abroad, SIT offers semester, summer, and academic year programs for undergraduate students in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as comparative programs in multiple locations.
Programs focus on critical global issues in specific geographical and cultural contexts using an interdisciplinary approach. Studying with host country faculty and living with families, students gain a deep appreciation for local cultures and become immersed in diverse topics ranging from the politics of identity to post-conflict transformation, from global health to environmental policy.
