  • Description

Examine Islam as a system of thought, Morocco’s political system and monarchy, and the country's place in the Middle East and in African, Berber, and Arab cultures.

Additional studies focus on women’s place within Moroccan society and contemporary development challenges. This nation’s history and culture reflect the influence of a long succession of invaders and settlers as well as the indigenous Berbers, who make up half of Morocco’s population.

Based in the cosmopolitan city of Rabat, students study Arabic and acquire an in-depth appreciation of a rich and rapidly changing society in Morocco. Excursions include the four imperial cities of Fes, Meknes, Rabat, and Marrakech. Students also travel to Zagora and Essaouira to explore the roles Morocco has played in Africa and southwestern Europe, both as a medieval and post-renaissance empire and as a contemporary society.

  • Highlights

Eight-week homestay in Rabat and a one-week rural village homestay. Educational excursions to Marrakech, Fes and Meknes, and the Zagora desert area.
