Study the rise of populist and left-leaning political and social movements in Latin America and their regional impact.

Examine the inequities that contribute to conflict and the factors driving conflict resolution in the context of Latin America.

This program explores the political, social and economic dynamics shaping Latin America's revolutionary movements. Students will examine the broad tilt to the left of regional governments; the ways conflicts in the region seem to emerge and be resolved; and the social demands that revolutionary movements champion.

Highlights

Topics of study include:

* The legacy of the Cuban and Nicaraguan revolutions
* The influence of Venezuela's Bolivarian revolution in the region
* Political and social transformation in Ecuador
* Revolutionary movements in Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil including the Chapare coca-growers, Argentina's piqueteros, and champions of land reform in Brazil.

Students will learn from scholars, policy analysts, government officials, union activists, and community leaders.

Lecturers will be drawn from institutions such as:
* Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB)
* Universidad Mayor de San Andres (UMSA)
* Universidad Mayor de San Simon (UMSS)
* Universidad Católica Boliviana (UCB)

Intensive Spanish language study and homestays with host families in the cities of La Paz and Santa Cruz will immerse students more deeply in Bolivian culture and facilitate cross-cultural communication and field study.

Scholarships are Available

SIT Study Abroad awarded USD750,000 in scholarships in 2011. About one-third of scholarship applicants receive financial assistance to participate in our programs. Only SIT Study Abroad participants can be considered for SIT Study Abroad scholarships. Awards generally range from USD500 to USD5,000 for semester programs, and USD300 to USD3,000 for summer programs. Financial need is a primary consideration for all of our scholarship decisions.

SIT Study Abroad's Mission Statement
