Description

Covering an area roughly the size of Australia, the Amazon River Basin contains the world's largest tropical forest, second longest river and an extraordinary diversity of plant and animal life. This region, recognized for its complex and delicately balanced ecosystems, provides a unique opportunity to explore the conflict between finite ecological resources and seemingly infinite human development demands.

Belem, the program base ideally located at the mouth of the Amazon, has a lush, tropical atmosphere and is a principal center for Amazonian research. Through Amazon River excursions, you gain firsthand insight into studies being undertaken in rain forest villages, research laboratories, extractive industry sites and archeological sites. Current land use strategies and struggles are the focus of excursions to the Southern Pary, an area of extensive logging and land degradation, where opportunities to interact with members of the Landless People's Movement deepen your understanding of the relationship between people and the environment.

Highlights

Four weeks homestay in Belem. Educational excursions include a riverboat exploration of the Amazon, and visits to the Balbina Dam/Manaus region and Maraba, Southern Para.
