  • Description

With the creation of Mercosur and recent trade negotiations within the context of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile have formalized their support of regional growth in the context of global competition. Along with the challenges of economic integration, this region -- renowned for cultural conflict and changing borders -- also faces profound social consequences of labor migration, industrial restructuring, border issues, the impact of mass media and pressure for democratization. From your program base in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, you travel to Porto Alegre, Brazil, an area heavily influenced by the growing momentum of social movements, to examine alternative development and participatory democracy models. Excursions to Montevideo, Uruguay and border areas of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil add to your understanding of the impact of economic integration policies on local communities.
