During my nine months here at Sierraflor I have had the privilege of becoming part of a very inique community. Sierraflor is not just a school, here both the physical and mental develpment of each student is nurtured with love and respect for the child. Being a volunteer in this environment has been one of the most important experiences of my life. I believe, with my whole heart, in the mission of this foundation. They are truly contributing to a more beautiful future for Ecuador and our world. Kellen Atkison
I went to Sierra Flor in an effort to get away from my monotonous life in the states. I came back with so much more. I was a science teacher for 4-11 graders and also volunteered in the daycare when I wasn't teaching my own classes. I came back with such an appreciation for teaching and for education. The kids at Sierra Flor are unlike anything else. They WANT to learn and they are just full of life. One thing people ask about my trip is if I spoke Spanish. I didn't speak it then, and I still don't! Yet, I traveled the country with fellow volunteers and saw some of the most beautiful things I swear I will EVER lay my eyes on. I came back to the states with a new appreciation for all that I have. I came back to the states with a new love of education. I came back to the states with friends from around the world. I would not trade my experience at Sierra Flor for anything. If you are thinking about volunteering at Sierra Flor, I strongly encourage you to stop thinking and start planning. You won't regret it! Good Luck!
I don't even know where to start. Working with the children and staff at Sierra Flor remains one of the best experiences of my life. As I teach regular ESL classes now, I can't help but miss the broader understanding of education and care that exists at SF. Each child is valued and loved and is not just someone passing though your class. They do their utmost to care for the children and to teach them valuable life skills. If Ecuador is a possible option for you, then do get in contact with the school. They do great work there and you can help contribute to their efforts.
