Location: Japan
Program Duration: 7-12 months (includes high school academic year abroad)
Dates: August 25, 2010--May 28, 2011
SYA Japan is opening its first school year program in the Fall of 2010. Located in Ichinomiya, Japan, the program will be open to high school juniors and seniors. In addition to intensive language training combined with full credit college preparation, a central element of the SYA philosophy is a 9 month-long homestay with a local family.
In its inaugural year, SYA Japan welcomes applications from students with or without Japanese language experience.
The application deadline is March 1st; however, students are welcome to submit an application after this date for later round admissions consideration.
The year long academic program is rounded out with 20 days of scheduled field trips around Japan. These trips will complement the academic curriculum, and provide students a chance to relax and experience Japan. Students may also receive permission to travel independently, taking advantage of Japan's incredibly well organized and safe public transportation.
Students will be guided in seeking out extracurricular activities that immerse them in their adopted community.
All secondary-school standardized tests (PSAT's, Sat's, AP's) and college counseling is provided on the SYA site.
USD 44,950; extensive financial aid is available
SYA provides extensive financial aid. Each year, SYA gives about 45% of students some kind of financial grants; and the average grant is about 2/3 of the total tuition. Financial aid is granted to families with a demonstrated need, and need is determined in consultation with the School and Student Services (SSS) organization. Admissions decisions are need-blind, so a student's demonstrated need will have no weight on his or her admission's decision.
Tuition includes:
* A full year's private school education
* A full year's room and board
* A comprehensive health insurance package from the day of arrival until day of departure
* A daily lunch pass
* A public transit pass
* All school-organized field trips, transportation and lodging

Using second language acquisition as the vehicle and foreign culture as the extension of the classrooms, School Year Abroad aims to teach U.S. secondary students self-reliance, responsible decision-making, resourcefulness, adaptability and respect for difference. While the international settings of SYA are unlike U.S. schools in many ways, and although students enjoy more independence than in most U.S. independent schools, our emphasis is on intellectual rigor in traditionally structured classes and on personal integrity and consideration for others in school, in host families and in the community.
