Location: Rennes: France
Program Duration: 7-12 months (includes high school academic year abroad)
Dates: September 2 to May 27
SYA France opened in 1967, just three years after the founding of School Year Abroad, and has been located in Rennes, the capital of Brittany, ever since. Our 19th-century townhouse, steps away from the city center, is an ideal location for students to find cultural and linguistic immersion without falling behind academically in their core American courses. French language, literature, history, art history and civilization are offered in French and taught by native teachers; while English and mathematics are taught in English.
All students are individually and carefully placed with a French host family, sharing fully in their lives and speaking their language. Students also participate in a wide array of activities in the community such as sports, art, music and dance. Travel trips to other French cities and sites are offered both with the school, and independently upon permission.
Applicants for this program must currently be studying French at high school level two or above. The application deadline is March 1st; however, students are welcome to submit an application after this date for later round admissions consideration.

Using second language acquisition as the vehicle and foreign culture as the extension of the classrooms, School Year Abroad aims to teach U.S. secondary students self-reliance, responsible decision-making, resourcefulness, adaptability and respect for difference. While the international settings of SYA are unlike U.S. schools in many ways, and although students enjoy more independence than in most U.S. independent schools, our emphasis is on intellectual rigor in traditionally structured classes and on personal integrity and consideration for others in school, in host families and in the community.
